Support at home

Many of maths concepts can be easily mirrored at home, where everyday activities provide valuable opportunities to practise and apply mathematical skills.

Ways that you can support at home:

  • Practise counting, adding or subtracting using everyday items such as toys, food or household objects.
  • Involve children in shopping by comparing prices, estimating totals or calculating change.
  • Use cooking to explore measuring and fractions.
  • Practise times tables, number bonds or quick mental maths while travelling or at home.
  • Talk about time by reading clocks, planning routines or working out how long activities take.
  • Spot and use numbers in real life, such as house numbers, car registrations or bus timetables.
  • Sort and group household items in different ways, then discuss how and why they are organised.
  • Play games that involve counting, strategy, scoring or problem solving, such as board or card games.

Children in Years 3–6 are also encouraged to continue their learning at home using Sumdog, which provides engaging, curriculum-linked games to support the development of key maths skills in a fun and familiar way.
